Role Summary
The Auto/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing mechanical issues, and completing repairs on a variety of company-owned vehicles and equipment. This includes light‑duty and heavy‑duty vehicles, forklifts, and construction equipment. The mechanic uses diagnostic software, fleet management systems, and OEM resources to ensure safe, efficient, and cost‑effective vehicle operation while adhering to company safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) services on light‑duty vehicles, heavy‑duty vehicles, forklifts, and construction equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues and make appropriate repairs on a wide range of vehicles and equipment.
- Utilize computer‑based diagnostic software and follow established diagnostic trees to determine repair needs.
- Assist the Fleet Parts Department by identifying and verifying parts required for repairs using OEM parts support systems.
- Use the Fleet Management System to review recent repairs, warranty information, and service history prior to performing repairs.
- Collaborate with drivers to discuss reported vehicle issues and help identify problem areas.
- Accurately log labor hours and repair details into the Fleet Management System on a daily basis to track labor and repair costs.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair a variety of vehicle systems.
- Working knowledge of automotive and diesel engines, braking systems, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Basic computer and software proficiency, including diagnostic and fleet management systems.
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with drivers, supervisors, and team members.
- Dependable, professional, and customer‑focused demeanor.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as an auto and/or diesel mechanic.
- Experience working with fleet vehicles, forklifts, or construction equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Mobility: Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing in and around vehicles and equipment.
- Manual Dexterity: Continuous use of hands and arms to handle tools, diagnostic equipment, and vehicle components.
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull parts, tools, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Visual Acuity: Ability to perform close‑up work, read diagnostic screens, and inspect vehicle components.
- Hearing and Communication: Ability to hear alarms, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions, and communicate effectively in a shop environment.
- Endurance: Ability to work for extended periods in physically demanding positions.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily performed in a maintenance garage, shop, or outdoor fleet service environment.
- Regular exposure to loud noises, moving mechanical parts, and vibrating equipment.
- Frequent exposure to grease, oils, fuels, exhaust fumes, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to eye protection, gloves, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
- Work environment subject to change based on duties performed.
