Location: 3001 Police
Pay Grade: A12
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Under general supervision performs specialized duties in support of the Public Relations Unit and the Administrative Division of the Police Department.

*This position performs duties deemed to be “safety sensitive" and is therefore subjected to random drug testing under the City’s policies*

Essential Job Functions

  • Supports the Public Relations Unit by performing clerical, technical and administrative duties; provides input to the department from outside sources/agencies.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements a variety of community outreach programs including, but not limited to, crime prevention, volunteer programs and safety promotion; may require after hours or attendance at weekend events.
  • Plans and coordinates activities and special events for citizens; assists in developing community activities
  • Communicates and coordinates with citizens and business owners, as directed; gives presentations
  • Develops and administers the annual community outreach program budgets
  • Communicates information to the news media concerning community outreach, as directed
  • Oversees special projects as assigned
  • Prepares and distributes news releases
  • Subject to call-outs as needed
  • Arrange and coordinates news briefings
  • Responds to news media inquiries
  • Coordinates media at incident scenes
  • Provides media information for current on-going investigations in coordination with CID
  • Relays human interest or helpful news stories to the media
  • Coordinates, promotes, and attends ceremonies, events and other activities recognizing or honoring agency personnel or members of the general public involved in events relative to the agency and/or public safety
  • Coordinates the release of non-routine, sensitive or confidential investigation findings and operations
  • Maintains/manages all social media accounts associated with the Police Department; responds to inquiries received through these outlets
  • Coordinates and monitors BAPD social media and account administrators
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires an Associate’s Degree in a course of study related to the occupational field, supplemented by one to two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Possession of Crime Prevention knowledge through training, experience and/or education.

Physical Requirements

Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in medium work, typically involving some combination of balancing, climbing, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, walking and which involves some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to20 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
