Job Summary
The Firefighter/EMT performs activities required to protect life and property by engaging in firefighting,
emergency aid, advanced life support, hazardous materials, and fire prevention assignments.
Firefighter/EMTs will maintain equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

Examples of Duties

Job Responsibilities
•Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus and ambulance, climbing
ladders, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire
combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks.
•Performs emergency aid activities including administering basic or advanced life support (ALS)
aid and providing other assistance as required.
•Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, hazardous materials, and related
subjects.
•Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates two way radio and other
communication equipment.
•Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire
prevention programs.
•Maintains fire equipment, EMS equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs minor
repairs to departmental equipment.
•Performs flow testing of hydrants.
•Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment;
cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor
repairs; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus, and equipment.
•Presents programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
•Maintains inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
•Performs salvage operations, such as, throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and
removing debris.
•Performs other duties, as assigned.
•Serves as a member of various employee committees as needed.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirements:
Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent.
Experience Required:
Must possess Basic E.M.T. certification at time of hire; must obtain IFSAC-
Firefighter I certification prior to completion of one-year probationary period; successful certification on
Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention Program (EVAC); any equivalent combination of experience
and education may be considered.
Must obtain Advanced EMT (NREMT & State licenses) within 1 year of starting Advanced EMT program.

Supplemental Information

Primary Work Location:
Fire Station. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly
works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts;
in high, precarious places; is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne
particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work
environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting activities when the noise levels may
be loud.
Employee may be exposed to Bloodborne Pathogens. Hepatitis B Vaccination is available.
