General Purpose
Performs routine and complex public safety work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances.Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patrols streets to locate stray animals, promptly captures animals, and transports them to the Animal Control Facility.
Responds to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances, including but not limited to, animals running at large, bites, property damage, and/or injuries.
Removes dead, injured, or dangerous animals from streets and residential premises.
Assist in the euthanization and properly disposes of animals.
Cares for, feeds, and houses animals at the Animal Control Facility; provides maintenance and upkeep of the Animal Control Facility.
Maintains records and files of the Animal Control Facility and the animals housed there; logs all incidents concerning animal control operations.
Compiles a variety of data regarding animal control activities; prepares reports on activities.
Investigates violations of animal control ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required; appears in court to testify regarding animal control cases.
Serves various criminal or civil notices or papers related to the enforcement of animal control ordinances.
Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action; expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
Maintains normal availability by two-way radio, pager, or telephone for consultation on major emergencies.
Carries out duties in compliance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provides mutual assistance during emergency situations, and provides general information concerning department activities.
Peripheral Duties
Maintains departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities.
Serves as a member on various employee committees as needed.Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience Guidelines
(A)High school diploma or GED equivalent.
(B)Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
(A)Some knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; working knowledge of animal restraint and care techniques.
(B)Skill in operating the tools and equipment listed below.
(C)Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public; ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to meet the special requirements listed below; and ability to learn City's geography.
(D)Ability to identify various animals and their behavior patterns.Supplemental Information
Special Requirements
(A)Must be 18 years of age at the time of employment.
(B)Must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License without record of suspension or revocation in any State.
(C)Must not have been convicted of any felony, crime of moral turpitude or a crime
of domestic violence.
(D)Must be a United States citizen or resident alien status, as defined by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
(E)Must be able to speak, read and write the English language.
(F)Must be of good moral character and temperate and possess industrious habits.
(G)Must be familiar with or have the ability to become familiar with work rules, Coweta Code of Ordinances, and safety policies and procedures.
